When I see an animal suffering, I feel a feeling of pain, of total empathy for that being. That's the only reason I created this book. It is not a work of political significance. But of humanity. Seeing the brutal ways in which our animal friends are treated on farms and in other places arouses in me the desire to let as many people as possible know the terrible cruelties that mankind addresses to animals of all species. Many intellectuals, writers, greats of history have recognized in animals, the ability to love and the desire to be loved. This capacity for love of animals, before any experiment, scientific study, is recognized, for example, with the continuous contacts of millennia of human history. Dogs, cats, horses and other animals have shown us humans what are capable, on the level of emotions, of beings that a substantial part of humanity still considers soulless, and therefore deserving to be treated like plants, or inanimate objects. In this book you will find material to reflect on how terrible are the living conditions of millions, billions of living beings to whom man, on the one hand, recognizes feelings and the ability to feel pain, on the other forces unspeakable, and, often, unjustifiable suffering. Having a relationship of affection with an animal, is a beautiful thing, and teaches to have respect for all animals and for Nature as a whole. The SOS Gaia association has created a petition on the Net, the description of which is an excellent manifesto regarding the respect that would be important to have for animals. "Animals feel fear, pain, emotions like humans. Like us, they were generated by our planet in the course of its journey through space, and as such they are related to us even if of different species. Article 13 of the Lisbon Treaty defined animals as "sentient beings", stipulating that the European Union and the Member States must take full account of the welfare requirements of animals as sentient beings. "Sentient beings" means that animals are therefore able to have self-awareness and self-awareness. They are full-fledged individuals. We must therefore respect animals in their need to live and not to be mistreated. The human species is not alone in experiencing emotions, joy and sorrow. We must respect the life and dignity of other species and teach young people respect for all living beings. It is necessary to teach children and young people that we humans share this planet with other inhabitants who, like us, experience emotions, feelings and how we can suffer both physically and psychologically. A document promoted by psychologist Annamaria Manzoni and supported by over 600 psychologists reveals the damage that violence against animals causes in children and young people. Entire generations will grow up in the conviction that this suffering is licit and will get used to not grasping the signs of suffering and terror. An education to the insensitivity and acceptance of the condition of inferiority of animals with respect to man, who can rightly use them at will, even if only to have fun of their condition of suffering. We believe it is essential that in schools we educate ourselves to respect the other intelligent life, introducing the theme of respect for animals. Educating children to respect animal life in schools can help create a harmonious and non-violent society for the benefit of all species, human and non-human. Therefore, the SOS Gaia Association and the signatories ask the competent Italian institutions to introduce respect for animals and antispeciesism in teaching programs. "The paradox of the contemporary world is that, while millions of Westerners publicly show themselves tender towards their pet, declaring love for their furry friend, in places such as slaughterhouses, intensive farms and with behaviors such as the abandonment of a dog or a cat, millions, billions of animals are forced to suffer terrible physical and psychological suffering, hellish, as if our Planet Earth is their real hell, more than a home that welcomes all of us. It is not a political battle, it is a battle of civilizations.
